It was ALWAYS a mess of a store - even for a Caldor's!

You would always see empty and/or broken liquor bottles in the parking lot, lots of fast food wrappers, chicken bones, etc. from the MCDonalds & KFC that were across the street / down the road...

Inside the Caldors, there were more security guards on duty (trying to prevent shoplifting) then there were cashiers or sales clerks.

That whole shopping center was a disaster - all the way back to when the Grants closed back in the mid to late 70s!

I remember during the 1990's reading in the local newspaper that police discovered the vacant Caldors building was being used as a brothel (!) by some local gang members who were pimping out girls there... there was even a picture in Newsday (local paper) that showed maybe 10 ratty old matresses that were scattered about the floor inside the Caldors... vagrants, drug addicts and other 'undesirables' would hook up with these girls - who would take them back to the Caldors to "complete their business"!

I'll bet that was a unique "use" of a vacant Caldors building!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33709921.post-20213048447950168912008-11-26T02:00:00.000-05:002008-11-26T02:00:00.000-05:00Lowe's should be opening at the beginning of 2009....Lowe's should be opening at the beginning of 2009. The building outside is mostly done, and it's amazing how much they changed the lot. It actually looks good!

Plaza Theater, Fantasyland and True Value need to be demolished, and Shoprite needs to hurry up and move into the abandoned Waldbaum's in the shopping center down the road (they have already put Help Wanted ads around for the location).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33709921.post-13292497130582052732008-05-27T13:50:00.000-04:002008-05-27T13:50:00.000-04:00The buildings were recently (Spring 2008) demolish...The buildings were recently (Spring 2008) demolished. The pictured sign (on the other side of Montauk Hwy) still stands. A sign at the demolition site proclaims Lowes as the next occupant.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
